Traq

Posted by: Jack on: May 13, 2009

I’ve probably written about this before, but I thought I would write about it again.

Traq is a project ticket/issue/bug tracking system capable of managing multiple projects and milestones.

Traq is coded in PHP and uses MySQL for the database related things, recently Traq 0.5 was released with many new features that make if a perfect system to use for developers.

In a few weeks Traq 0.6 will be released which features a whole new ticket filter system making it easy to filter out tickets for milestones, status, types, etc. And Anti-spam features using the Akismet spam service.

Twivo Password Reset

Posted by: Jack on: May 5, 2009

Today I decided to finish off part of Twivo that should have been done a long time ago, the Password Reset stuff.

It only took about 10-20mins to get done, it’s a simple and secure system, the only problem would be if someone has @twivo.com emails blacklisted..

Twivo Forum

Posted by: Jack on: May 4, 2009

The Twivo Forum has been opened to the public after only being in development for 2-3 days, yup I coded it fast didn’t I.

I was able to create the forum fast because I use the best coding tips, and the best tip would be: Start simple, which is what I did, I created what was needed first and will be expanding on that in the next few days.

The code behind the forum is simple but powerful, the forum permissions inherit from “defaults” for each user group unless there are specific permissions for the forums. Which saves space in the database.

The main forum file is under 100 lines of code, which displays the forum index, topic list, view topic, new topic and quick reply. But how with so little code? I did what I always do, I create a class file that contains all the functions needed, such as Forum::getforums(), Forum::createtopic(), you get the idea. This file has over 600 lines of code and is only loaded when needed.

In the next few days I will be adding more features to the forum such as quoting other users, an WYSIWYG editor type thing for the BBCode features and some other things that every forum needs.

Just to some possible questions that might be asked, I’m unsure if I will be releasing the forum technology to the public at the moment, unless of course your willing to pay for it.

Media Temple

Posted by: Jack on: April 20, 2009

Twivo, one of my projects was hosted on a Media Temple Grid-Service site, It was going well until today when I logged into the Account Center and clicked on the “Admin” link for the MySQL database Twivo used and this is where it gets bad.

The page refreshed, there was no phpMyAdmin page just the Database list page with no Twivo database, I started to panic and put in a request to Media Temple to see if they could restore it.

After about 5-10 minutes I had an email in my inbox from Media Temple, it was a reply to my support request to have the DB restored, but it wasn’t what I expected.

The email said it would cost over $125 PER HOUR to restore the DB and that they may not be able to do it, so I talked with the other admin of Twivo and we decided to tell Media Temple to not bother and that we would rather start from nothing than pay so much for something that might not even be possible.

I immediately started moving all files to my Liquid Web server and setup a new database from scratch. There are few good things that will come of this, but nothing that can help with the loss of data.

Now that we’re on the Liquid Web server we can setup more automated processes, get full access to the server files, and do just about anything we want.

Because we’ve had to start from nothing, we will be opening user registrations for a week, so anyone interested in Twivo should sign up as soon as possible before the open registrations are closed.

From the experience I’ve had with Media Temple I doubt I will ever use them again, Liquid Web’s support is faster and so much more helpful than Media Temple.

Microsoft makes little kids cry

Posted by: Jack on: April 19, 2009

My little brother loves his Xbox 360, he plays it just about every day, well at least he did.

Today when he got home he went to turn on his Xbox and got the “Red Ring of Death”, 3 red flashing lights around the power button. After doing some searching on it I found that Microsoft rushed their piece of shit console to beat the other piece of shit consoles from Sony and Nintendo.

Due to them rushing they fraked up a lot of things, making important things such as the heat absorption stuff smaller to fit in the DVD player, at least thats what some sites I found are saying.

Now from what I’ve read due do the smaller heat absorption stuff some things overheat and come loose which causes the lights to flash.

Hopefully the Xbox is still under warranty and Microshit will fix it.

Call of Duty 4

Posted by: Jack on: April 17, 2009

I’ve always loved playing games, my favorite type of game would have to be an FPS that is fun to play, like Call of Duty 4.

After beating the Single Player side of the game I looked at the Multiplayer part and fell in love with it, I played day and night online fraggin’ noobs.

But recently I started playing the Hardcore side of Multiplayer, and to be honest I find it a lot more fun and much easier than regular multiplayer. Why? Well you don’t have anything on your screen, no ammo count, no cross hair, only the chat and if your team has the UAV, then the map is also displayed, but other than that there’s nothing.

Playing without a cross hair is much more fun, you have to know where to aim, not use some kind of visual helper, which is what makes it fun.

Another thing I love about the Hardcore mode of CoD4 is that you don’t need to shoot someone a ton of times to kill them if you can’t get a headshot, in hardcore all you have to do is shoot them a couple of times. I’ve actually killed someone with one shot to the foot more than once.

After playing CoD4 on Hardcore it’s hard to go back to regular and play, I keep forgetting it takes more than one or two shots to kill people.

Then when you go to play another online FPS game like Americas Army it’s just boring, I know AA is a slow paced game, but so can CoD4 on Search and Destroy.

If anyone ever asked me how I thought about CoD4 I would say it’s the best damn FPS game I’ve ever played.

AAPT

Posted by: Jack on: April 17, 2009

Since I moved to the shithole I call St Albans, I’ve been forced to use ADSL from a company called AAPT, and while I hate ADSL I hate AAPT more, why? I will tell you.

First, I will state the only thing I like about the ADSL I have at the moment, I’m close to the exchange so it’s pretty fast compared to the other ADSL lines I’ve used.

Now on to why I hate AAPT and their internet services. Their prices are absolutely fraking ridiculous for the bandwidth and speed you get, I mean how do they get away with charging $90 for 15GB (actually LESS!) a month and 8000kbps speed, It’s a rip off.

Now when I say 15GB I mean as in download limit, now I can put up with a download limit just as I have all my life but at $90 it’s just stupid to have a 15GB limit, last time I payed $90 I had at least 50GB.

The bandwidth problems don’t stop there, for the past two months I have some how gone over the limit, which is complete BULLSHIT. I took a look at what I download, which is 3 maybe 4 350MB files a month which is 1.4GB, bringing my remaining limit to 13.6GB, now I may download a few files that are around 100MB, lets say 3 times at 120MB, which will bring my remaining downloads to 13.2GB.

Now 13.2GB is a lot, how can it just disappear? I don’t get a lot of emails, nor do I browse websites that are heavy on images. I download a few songs off iTunes but not enough that they add up to 13GB, so lets just say I have 10GB left after adding up my emails, internet browsing and iTunes downloads.

So where is my remaining 10GB going? I bet you I don’t have 15GB at all, I think AAPT have fraked me over and given me some bullshit plan that costs $90 and only has 5GB.

I thought my old ISP, BigPond was shit, but now I see they are a hell of a lot better than AAPT. When I move I will probably use either TPG or BigPond. TPG has more bandwidth but a static IP while BigPond has less bandwidth, a static IP and costs more. Any smart person would go for TPG which I will probably do.

Now if you want to know what I think of AAPT, I think they are a bunch of idiotic son of a bitches that slow people’s internet down just for the fun of it, even if they haven’t even used 50% of their bandwidth and would rate them 0 out of 10 for their services, internet and support.

Where would I place them on the shit list? at the top.

Bootcamp

Posted by: Jack on: April 16, 2009

When I first got my Mac I tried to use Bootcamp to attempt at running Windows on my Mac for fun, I must have done something wrong as it didn’t work. Anyway I tried it again last week and it worked this time, Then I asked myself, how can I use this to my advantage.

I installed one of my favorite games on there that don’t work on my gaming machine, Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic, the best Star Wars game of all time.

After installing it I said to myself, I hope it works. After launching the game and getting as far as I got on my gaming machine I was expecting a crash – but it didn’t. So I proceeded to play and expected the game to crash every time I took a step in the game.

After completing the part on the space ship, I said to myself if it were going to crash it would have done it long ago.

I now use the Windows installation on my Mac to play games that don’t work on my gaming machine, I think after I have completed the game again but on the good site (not dark side) I will install Knights of The Old Republic II and play that.

Bootcamp, What would I do without you? – Well I would have to setup my old Windows PC I had before my gaming machine. But that would be too much trouble.

Twivo Development Update

Posted by: Jack on: April 13, 2009

Twivo is coming along great, I stopped adding services and started on an RSS feed for the main timeline while the current services were being tested.

So far the current services are holding up great and working well as far as I can tell, so starting tomorrow if I have time, I will be adding more services such as Raptr and other useful ones.

The RSS feeds are only enabled for site admins at the moment but once they have been tested they will be enabled for all users.

I also have to get a proper development site for Twivo setup so all updates and development related posts can be posted there.

Another thing I have been thinking about is letting current Twivo members invite their friends, but I need to discuss this with the other admins first.

Problem Solved?

Posted by: Jack on: April 9, 2009

For a while now I’ve had a problem with my mouse on my Mac, it was slow and sluggish and no matter what speed I set the tracking speed to it never helped.

Recently though I plugged in the mouse I use on my gaming PC and it was perfect, so it had to be one of two things, either the mouse or the surface it was on at the old house, I plugged in the mouse I was using on it a while ago which is some Logitech mouse and it looks like that was the problem, so I plugged in my old mouse I used on my gaming PC before I got my new one and it seems much more faster than the Logitech.

Now the thing is, I payed like $40-50 for this old mouse and $80 for the Logitech and the cheaper one is better. Now this shows that either Logitech make shit mice, or Microsoft – yes I said Microosft make uber mice. I specifically didn’t mention Microsoft made the old mouse before because using Microsoft hardware with a Mac is just plain wrong, but I have no choice but to if I want a fast mouse.

And before anyone says to turn up the tracking speed of the mouse let me just say go jump off a cliff after rereading this post, because I already tried it.

I will have to buy yet another mouse for my Mac.
